HONOLULU, HI (December 18, 2013) – Immerse yourself in the world of the ancient Hawaiians at Discover Kualoa, a cultural celebration set to launch on Saturday, January 18, 2014. From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kualoa Ranch, this family-friendly event will offer endless opportunities to learn about the historical valley, the sacred Mōli‘i fishpond and also participate in various activities.
Discover Kualoa will honor an important landmark in Ahupua‘a Hakipu‘u: Mōli‘i Loko I‘a, also known as the Mōli‘i Fishpond. Traditional legend says that menehune built the 125-acre pond over the course of one night—a majestic feat for a spectacular natural setting.
Throughout the day at Discover Kualoa, teachers and professionals will teach classes for attendees to learn how to make their own pieces of art using lauhala leaves. Adding to the cultural festivities, there will also be live entertainment and storytelling, poi pounding, lei making and surfboard shaping demonstrations. In addition, Discover Kualoa will have food vendors offering a mix of delicious sustenance.
January’s Discover Kualoa will kick off a three-month festival and will be followed by two more Discover Kualoa events: February 15 and March 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each of the three events will highlight a different facet of Hawaiian culture: January will feature the Mōli‘i fishpond and ancient arts, February will celebrate Makahiki season and March will honor both traditional and modern Hawaiian song and dance. Also, the three events will be held on different parts of the ranch: January will be set in Ahupaua’a Hakipu’u, February will be held in Ahupua’a Ka’a’awa and March’s event will be in Ahupua’a Kualoa.
